Low-Carb is better for weight loss - New Study

Posted on November 07, 2015 by Ruth Buttigieg | 0 comments

A new study published last month in the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, found that low carbohydrate diets are much better approaches for weight loss than low fat diets.

The Study

This new study directly compared 53 previous trials with data from 68,000 participants that had either looked at low fat weight loss approaches and/or low carbohydrate approaches. The aim of this study was to find out which approach is best for weight loss success.

After all the number crunching, it was found that low carbohydrate approaches were significantly better at producing long term results. The researchers also commented that their findings do not support low fat approaches for “meaningful weight control.”

Bad Swaps

When the dietary guidelines started to advise people to cut fat out of their diet, people tended to turn to carbohydrate based foods as a replacement. This is because foods such as sugar, taste great and are low in calories.

However, by focusing on reducing calorie intake, this led to favouring certain foods over others. This choice was based not on the nutrient density of the foods, but simply on calorie content. The paper does not say that calories are not important, but rather stresses the importance of sending the message that food quality is much more important if health is going to be improved.

Studies continue to show that the quality of food has a far greater impact on health. The reason being that the human body is a complex mixture of chemical reactions and the “Calorie is a Calorie“ mantra is ignoring how different foods interact with the body.

Lifestyle vs Quick Fix

Cutting out carbohydrates can seem easy - no bread, no pasta, no rice, no cakes. However stress and a busy lifestyle can lead to you not eating regularly throughout the day and also not making the right food choices.

A low carbohydrate diet is a lifestyle - not a quick fix. Research continues to link motivation as playing a bigger role on your journey than it is given credit. By changing your habits, you’ll start to see the benefits that you are hoping for.

Base your meal choices around dietary fibre options such as lovely green vegetables and berries for those mighty antioxidants. Choose full fat dairy options as these contain fat-soluble vitamins that our body needs for optimal function.

Stay away from items that say low in sugar and low in fat, these will have artificial additives added to them and have little to no nutrient content. Base your food choices on quality rather than quantity.
